A KLIN Perspective By Roger Larson
"Partnerships" 10-28-08
The operative word in any initiative these days is "partnerships", whether that be in foreign relations or local projects. One local partnership that is pleasant to see is the cooperation between the University of Nebraska and the city of Lincoln to achieve common goals. The proposed arena is a good example, where Mayor Beutler and Athletic Director Tom Osborne are working together to gather input and share information with the public. Already some public forums have been held and scheduled and I'm sure there are many more to come. The Mayor and Tom Osborne want to be sure that the public understands what is proposed, how it will affect our quality of life, how much it will cost, and who will pay for it. They also want to get feedback from the citizens so that there will be a high level of knowledge when the issue comes to a vote. The benefits of this initiative are many and its success will affect the future of our city in so many ways.
The welfare of the citizenry is legitimate government business and we are fortunate to have the City and the University recognizing that a modern venue is needed to replace the aging and deteriorating Pershing Auditorium. It is our duty as citizens to listen to the conversations at these forums, and read the stories about them, ask questions and make suggestions. At the time of the election, there should be no one pleading ignorance on this subject unless they've been in a cave somewhere.
A favorable vote on the arena will certainly take Lincoln to "the next level", as the popular saying goes.
I'm Roger Larson, and that's the way I see it.
